This study explored opinons of mental illness of famlies of parients admitted for psychiatric care. The purpose was to provide data to contribute to the planning of an educational program for patients´ families.
The subjects for this study were a convenience sample of 32 family members of patients admitted to the psychiatric care unit of a university hospital in Seoul. The measurement tool was the Opinions about Mental Illness Scale (O. M.I. S) by Cohen and Streuning.
Data were collected from September 6th to 30th, 1991, through questionnaires. Data analysis included means, percentage, standard deviation and ANOVA.
The findings are organized according to the general characteristics related to the family´s opinions.
1. Age and marital status were related to Authoritarianism. The family´s opinions about authoritarianism were stronger in families who are getting older and whose other members are married.
2. Age and marital status were also related to benevalence. The family´s opinions about benevalence were stronger in familiy´s who are younger and whose other members are married.
3. Relationship with the patient was related to Health Ideology. The patient´s spouse had the strongest opinion about mental health ideology.
4. Marital status was related to Social Restrictiveness. The family´s opinions about social restrictiveness were stronger in families whose other members are married.
5. No variables were related to Interpersonal Etiology.
